America, Oregon are losing farms

Between 2017 and 2022, the U.S. experienced a significant decline in the number of farms, down by 141,733 (7%), and a reduction in operated acreage by 20.1 million acres (2.2%), equivalent to the size of Maine. Most farms and acreage operated fall under family-held structures, with non-family corporate farms comprising only a small percentage. Despite these declines, the value of agricultural production increased by 40%, reaching $533 billion in 2022, indicating increased efficiency and productivity. Various factors such as technological advancements, economic dynamics, and regional conditions contribute to these shifts. While larger farms benefit from economies of scale, smaller operations face challenges, leading to a call for comprehensive support through initiatives like a robust farm bill. The Census of Agriculture underscores the need for sustained efforts to ensure the long-term viability and diversity of the agricultural landscape across the nation.
