Washington’s ag overtime law offers lessons for Oregon

Starting this month, farmers in Washington State must pay overtime to workers logging over 40 hours a week, a law passed in 2021. However, farmworkers argue the new law results in employers capping hours at 40, reducing overall pay. Many, like father and son Rojelio and Jose Valdez, feel the impact, with bosses hiring new workers to avoid overtime costs. Senator Ron Muzzall notes seasonal workers are hit hardest, as staying year-round yields less pay. Workers defend their choice to work long hours during peak seasons. The United Farm Workers of America label the exclusion of farm workers from overtime pay as "racist" and push for nationwide inclusion.
